IWSG monthly post |
I confess - I have tried writing stories that happen to ordinary people in ordinary surroundings. I may have managed ten pages or so, and then some fantasy character peeks from behind the corner like bird of a Swiss cuckoo-clock. And refuses to leave. I can't help it. It just happens. I sometimes wonder if it is a counterbalance to my Egyptology research (and the 7 years of MA studies). Academic text can be rather... numbing at times. So, I figured why try to be a "serious" author, and jumped into the fantasy genre feet first. And, as you know me, I love to mix history into the story as well. So historical fantasy is my thing. |
What I like about my genre is the way it can take the reader away from the everyday life, which can be boring, challenging and sad at times. A good fantasy story is mind candy, and feeds the imagination. It allows the reader to be a hero, to feel strong emotions safely, to imagine wonderful worlds in their mind's eye - and also makes history alive to them.
I am planning on writing an alternate historical fantasy story in steampunk/gaslight genre. Even more fun (for the writer at least). As it is, I have fallen down the rabbit hole of Victorian era research - as steampunk / gaslight genre happens preferably in Victorian London. I'll have to remind myself at some point to stop ordering more historical research of the Victorian age and the history of London and just start writing. I will be writing the first draft on my newsletter platform at Substack. You can sign up for my free newsletter there.
These first drafts will be for paid subscribers after the first free chapters- for 5 $ / month of 50 $ / year. The free chapters are there so you can first check if you are interested in the story. Those subscribed will get access to all previous chapters that are online. At some point I may need to remove them as Amazon doesn't accept a book to be accessible for free anywhere else - this removing happen when the book is sent to the editor. Here's hoping I find a way to keep the great Zon happy with keeping the first draft on my newsletter page...
While I write, the subscribers can comment on the chapters well and make suggestions.
The link to my newsletter page is at the bottom of the page. (Click on it to see my newsletters, you can do that without subscribing first)
