Thinking about the personal traits of my novel characters I think two things pop out the most. Humor and strong female characters. Humor is a thing I really appreciate in people. The ability to laugh at oneself and the world is a gift. As they say - up close life is a tragedy, from a distance, a comedy. Having a good laugh with someone is one of the best things in the world. The older I get, the more I appreciate humorous movies and books. And if my proofreader is to be believed, she has had tons of fun with my books. |
Also I live in Finland, where women are strong. They don't wait around for a male to come and rescue them from life's situations. No. They decide what they want to do with their lives, do it, and won't be dictated to. It would be out of the question that a married woman would be under the rule of their husbands.
I remember one discussion with a man, a foreigner. He stated that it is hard to be polite to women here, like open the doors for them - they are too fast and do it themselves. They are not used to flowery language, say "oh that was nothing" if you try to complement them for something they have done. They are well educated, and handle day jobs and family in their stride.
So I suppose the female characters in my novels are basically Finns. LOL :D
