There's a hole in the bucket...

We had a wonderful English teacher at school - she taught us songs in English as well. One of my favorites was the good old "There's a hole in the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry..." I'm sure you have heard it at some point.

When we put this bucket hanging on a pile of wood (soon to become firewood for our sauna), I found myself singing this song.

If you look closely, you'll notice that there is a tap at the bottom - you push it up and water comes out. Very handy in summer cottage. You see we don't have running water there. Or rather - we do, if someone takes the bucket and runs with it.

We had to fell some old trees when it was evident that they had begun to rot. The tree trunks were piled to wait for the moment when we had time to make firewood (well, we've been working at it for two years already and there's no end in sight yet...). It is a dusty and resiny business, hence the need for a bucket to wash our hands.

We fill it with rain water from a nearby barrel or take water from the sea which is only a few steps away. The sea water here in Finland is not very salty, so you can use it to wash your hands without getting a crust of salt on your skin

This picture was taken at the beginning of summer, when the first warm days had arrived and it was a pleasure to be outdoors as long as possible.

And how did that old children's song go again...

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,

There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza,
There's a hole.

Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then fix it dear Henry, dear Henry, fix it.

With what should I fix it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I fix it, dear Liza, with what?

With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With a straw, dear Henry, dear Henry, with a straw.

But the straw is too long, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The straw is too long, dear Liza, too long.

Then cut it dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then cut it dear Henry, dear Henry, cut it!

With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what shall I cut it, dear Liza, with what?

With an ax, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With an ax, dear Henry, an ax.

But the ax is too dull, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The ax is too dull, dear Liza, too dull.

Then, sharpen it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then sharpen it dear Henry, dear Henry, sharpen it!

With what should I sharpen it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I sharpen, dear Liza, with what?

With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With a stone, dear Henry, dear Henry, a stone.

But the stone is too dry, dear Liza, dear Liza,
The stone is too dry, dear Liza, too dry.

Then wet it, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
Then wet it dear Henry, dear Henry, wet it.

With what should I wet it, dear Liza, dear Liza,
With what should I wet it, dear Liza, with what?

With water, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
With water, dear Henry, dear Henry, with water.

But how shall I get it?, dear Liza, dear Liza,
But how shall I get it?, dear Liza, with what?

In the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, dear Henry,
In the bucket, dear Henry, dear Henry, in the bucket!

But there's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza,
There's a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, a hole.

There's a hole.
